YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID COURSES

Youth Mental Health First Aid course (two day)

The Youth MHFA course has been designed to equip people with the right skills to be able to help young people with their emotional well-being. It does not teach people to be counsellors, but it does give people the tools to identify a young person that may be in crisis, provide initial help, assist and support that person to access appropriate professional help.

The Youth MHFA course is an intensive two-day course involving interactive presentations and group discussions. Youth MHFA is an internationally recognised, evidence based, evaluated training programme designed specifically for people who teach, work, live with or care for young people aged 8-18.  This course was originally developed at the Centre for Mental Health Research in Australia and the English edition has been adapted by MHFA England (www.mhfaengland.org).  This course can accommodate between 8 and 16 people.

Completing the two-day course qualifies people as Youth Mental Health First Aiders. Youth Mental Health First Aiders have:

  • An in depth understanding of young people’s mental health and factors that affect wellbeing;

  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues;

  • Confidence to reassure and support a young person in distress;

  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening;

  • Knowledge to help a young person recover their health by guiding them to further support, whether that’s through self-help sites, their place of learning, the NHS, or a mix;

  • Engaging with parents, carers and external agencies where appropriate;

  • Ability to support a young person with a long-term mental health issue;

  • Tools to look after your own mental wellbeing.

The Youth MHFA course is split up into four sections:

  • What is mental health?

  • Depression and anxiety

  • Suicide and psychosis

  • Self-harm and eating disorders

Everyone who completes the course receives a Youth MHFA manual and a certificate to certify they are a trained Youth Mental Health First Aider.
